Lower the Speed Limit on Thorpe Langton Road for the Safety of Our Children
The Issue
The terrible crash late on Monday afternoon near the Bus Stop, and the fatality on the A6 near Kibworth Tip on Tuesday this week, has prompted me to re-start campaigning to get the speed limit from the crossroads on the B6047 to beyond the East Langton junction reduced to 40mph, and to have illuminated signage at school pick-up and drop-off times.
I started campaigning to reduce the speed limit on Thorpe Langton Road back in 2017, after witnessing a heart-stopping near-miss incident of a child nearly being hit by a speeding car moments after they got off the school bus. Is it a coincidence that this happened at the same time of day as the crash on Monday 9th December?
As part of the community and a daily observer of traffic at the bus stop, it became evident to me that this seemingly quiet country road is a dangerous cut through due to the speed and variety of traffic that uses it.
The majority Thorpe Langton Road has a 60mph speed limit but it's has many ‘hazards’. These range from school bus stops and narrow pavements in places, to no pavements that pose immense risks to children and pedestrians, as well as many farm gateways, junctions and footpaths. It's a huge concern that Leicestershire County Council Highways Department declined the Parish Council's request to carry out a community speed check deeming it too risky in 2017.
We no longer want any member of our community's safety to be in danger just by commuting to and from school, work or the villages. It's high time to demand change. We call upon the relevant authorities to reduce the existing speed limit from the B6047 to Thorpe Langton. Let's turn the call into action and ensure the safety of our community, particularly our children.
The last petition in 2017 ended when Council asked me to stop the petition, in return for an audience at the to the Leicestershire County Council Highway Forum for Harborough council meeting on 28th February 2017. This resulted in painted ‘SLOW’ signs either side of the bus stop, it really wasn’t a victory, they can and should do better this time.
