How many more serious crashes will it take before something changes on Kings Road?

A recent serious collision was the moment I decided that enough is enough.

I live in Howie Centre. This is our community, our route to work and school, and the road our families use every day. Yet vehicles are still permitted to travel at highway speeds through an area lined with homes, businesses, driveways and intersections.

Kings Road is no longer simply a highway passing through open countryside. It runs directly through a growing residential community — and the speed limit should reflect that reality.

Serious and fatal collisions have already occurred along this road. Every collision affects real people: families receiving terrible phone calls, injured residents, emergency responders attending another crash scene, and a community asking why more was not done sooner.

We should not need another fatality before the Province acts.

Higher speeds mean less time to react, longer stopping distances and more severe consequences when something goes wrong. For pedestrians, cyclists, children and people simply trying to enter or leave their driveway, the difference can be life-changing.

What we are asking for

We are calling on the Province of Nova Scotia and the Department of Public Works to immediately review and reduce the speed limit on Kings Road through Howie Centre.

And we are asking for one thing in particular:

Do not make our community wait for a massive future road project before addressing the speed limit.

Major infrastructure projects can take years. A speed-limit review does not need to.

The Province can review the speed limit now. It can improve signage and pavement markings now. It can assess pedestrian safety and intersections now.

Every day nothing changes, thousands of vehicles continue travelling this road under the same conditions.

This petition is not about inconveniencing drivers or adding a few minutes to a journey.

It is about making sure people get home safely.

Stop ignoring this problem, you have the reports, you have the deaths, stop delaying. Lower the speed limit on Kings Road and make Howie Centre safer before another family pays the price.
