I am a concerned citizen who believes that the age of 20 is a more appropriate legal drinking age. At this age, individuals are no longer teenagers but adults, capable of making responsible decisions. The Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act of 1984 currently sets the minimum legal drinking age at 21. However, I propose that it be lowered to 20 - an age when citizens are considered mature enough in many other aspects of life.

It's important to note that in many countries around the world, including most European nations, the legal drinking age is lower than 21 and they report fewer alcohol-related problems (Source: International Center for Alcohol Policies). Furthermore, at the age of 18 in America we are allowed to vote and serve our country in military service; surely by two years later at twenty we should be trusted with alcohol consumption.

This issue is personal to me because I believe that turning twenty signifies a level of maturity where one can handle responsibilities like consuming alcohol sensibly. It's time for us as a nation to reconsider our stance on this matter and trust our young adults with more freedom.
