My name is Karen, and at the age of 57, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. But what truly broke my heart was discovering that this type of cancer is most common in women under 50. This is alarming because, in the UK, routine breast cancer screening doesn't start until age 50, and by then, many women like me, especially those with TNBC, have already been missed, and the opportunity for early detection has passed.
In contrast, cervical screening in the UK does not wait until women turn 50. So, why should breast cancer screening? It is time for the UK Government and NHS England to lower the breast screening age from 50 to 30. This change is crucial because early detection saves lives. Studies show that early detection increases the survival rate substantially, and TNBC requires immediate attention due to its aggressive nature.
Unfortunately, too many young women are being diagnosed at advanced stages of breast cancer, particularly TNBC, which could have been caught earlier with routine screening. The rise in these cases is undeniable, with statistics from health organisations indicating a significant number of younger women affected by this silent and aggressive form of cancer.
According to Breast Cancer UK, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with approximately 55,000 new cases each year. About 20% of these are diagnosed in women under 50. This staggering statistic highlights the dire need to reconsider our current screening guidelines.
The reality is that breast cancer does not discriminate based on age; it can affect women in their 30s, 40s, and even younger. Therefore, the policy must change to reflect this new reality.
Lowering the screening age will not only help in early detection but also alleviate the financial and emotional burden on the NHS by reducing the need for intensive treatments required for advanced cancer stages. It will empower thousands of women to take charge of their health and lives, knowing they have done all they can to prevent this disease from progressing silently.
I appeal to everyone to help us make this change happen by signing this petition. Let's ensure that no more lives are unnecessarily lost to breast cancer due to being diagnosed too late. Please sign and share this petition widely to bring about this crucial health policy change in the UK.
