Lower the Age for Bowel Cancer Screening to include all adults under 60 in the NHS
The Issue
On September 10th, 2020, my family lost a beloved member - my brother Rob. He was only 44 when he succumbed to bowel cancer. Rob had his whole life ahead of him but was unknowingly living with a ticking time bomb called Lynch syndrome, a genetic condition that causes cancers in young people. If he had known about his risk earlier, he would have paid more attention to his symptoms instead of being dismissed by his GP.
Bowel cancer is treatable if detected early enough. However, the current age threshold for bowel cancer screening in the NHS is set at over 60s which means many younger people like Rob are missing out on potentially life-saving early detection and treatment.
Around 5% of bowel cancers are due to conditions passed on through families like Lynch syndrome. By lowering the age limit for screening to under 40s we could detect these cases earlier and increase survival rates significantly.
We cannot bring back those who we've already lost like my brother Rob but we can make a difference going forward by changing this policy. We owe it to them and their loved ones left behind heartbroken.
Please join us in calling upon the NHS to extend bowel cancer screening services to under-40s so that no other family has to suffer as ours did. Sign this petition today and help us save more lives from this devastating disease.
