Lower Speed Limit on Main Street in Griffith, IN

Lower Speed Limit on Main Street in Griffith, IN
The Issue
A neighborhood is family, and within each neighborhood, you'll find a diverse group of adults, children, and pets. You form bonds. You look out for each other. Their kids are your kids and their pets are your pets. Our little neighborhood is full of people that are personally involved in our Griffith community, and I'm reaching out to the rest of that community to look out for us and help us with a request to change the speed limit in the residential West block of Main Street.
I've lived on Main Street for just short of twenty years. Over the years, traffic has increased drastically and people drive faster than they ever have. We have had in influx of families move in over the last few years and with them come children and pets. Recently, a few pets have been hit by cars as drivers enter the residential area coming from the East on Main Street. You don't realize the impact of that until you are looking down and those sad, red eyes stare back at you. A car traveling 45mph does a lot more damage than one traveling 20mph. But, this is not just about our pets; there are many small children in our neighborhood who are at risk of getting hit, too. Our children shouldn't be banned from playing in their front yard because people speed down the street and we, as parents, worry that cars will get too close, or something else unpredictable happens.
To ensure the safety of all residents — both human and animal — we urge local authorities to lower the speed limit before entering the residential area on Main Street. Coming from the higher speed limit wooded area makes it difficult for people to slow down once they hit the residential parts after Enbridge; some of those cars travel at least 50mph! I realize that this will affect flow of traffic, but aren't our kids and other family worth it? Isn't two blocks of a lower speed limit worth saving lives? Shouldn't we be doing all we can to create a safer environment for everyone.
Please sign this petition to help protect our loved ones and make Griffith a safer place to live.
