Lower Current Tax Rate due to Increased Property Evaluations

The Issue

Throughout Cumberland County, property evaluations have shockingly surged by 100 percent. This is not due to any substantial improvements or developments within our county, city, or towns, but rather a reassessment of values that heavily burdens homeowners and property owners. Currently, there is a looming fear that this sharp increase in evaluations will inevitably result in a corresponding increase in our tax burden. This petition is a plea to our local government and regulatory bodies to lower the tax rate and to maintain revenue neutrality.

According to the Tax Foundation, an independent tax policy nonprofit, jurisdictions typically aim to maintain revenue neutrality during reassessment periods, meaning that overall tax burden does not increase due to appraisal increases. Thus, it is reasonable to request the same for our Cumberland County.

Rising property tax rates can lead to financial distress for families, particularly those on lower incomes or tight budgets. It can also act as a deterrent to potential new residents, and negatively impact our local economy. Let us voice our concerns and demand a fair treatment for all county, city, and towns citizens within Cumberland County.

Please support this cause; your signature is a symbolic show of solidarity to our local community aiming to lower the current tax rate and maintain revenue neutrality during this reassessment period.
