Lower cookie prices at International Studies Charter School
The Issue
For four years, I have had the pleasure of attending International Studies Charter School, where I've cherished not only my education but also the small moments of joy that make school life memorable. One such joy has always been the chance to indulge in a simple, comforting cookie from our school canteen. However, recently, this small treat has become a luxury rather than a regular delight due to a 50% price increase.
The price of cookies has gone up from $1 to $1.50, which, on the surface, might seem insignificant to some. But for many students including myself, it has taken away an accessible treat that used to bring us comfort and a sense of community. This change reflects more than just a financial adjustment — it impacts our school’s culture of inclusivity, where all students should have equal access to the little things that make school enjoyable.
The school administration has indicated that the increase in cookie prices is tied to rising costs. While we understand that expenses can fluctuate, we believe there are other ways to manage these costs without passing them onto students. With a bit of creativity and resourcefulness, such as exploring bulk purchasing or negotiating better deals with suppliers, the school can maintain fairness without compromising its budget.
Furthermore, a small price reduction might seem inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but for many students, it's about being able to enjoy a sense of belonging and equal participation. It is disheartening to see some classmates having to forgo this small pleasure because of affordability, which should not become a source of division within our school.
I urge the administration to carefully reevaluate the current pricing strategy and find a balanced solution that prioritizes both students’ needs and financial sustainability. Let’s make our beloved school a place where every student can enjoy the small but significant joys it offers without barriers.
