As a freshman in high school, I was faced with a life-threatening situation upon overdosing on opioids and had to make the difficult decision of rejecting an ambulance ride to the hospital because of the exorbitant cost. They told me it would be around $1,200. This should not be happening in our country. No one should have to choose between their health and financial stability.

According to a study by Kaiser Family Foundation, ambulance rides can cost anywhere from $224 to over $2,200 depending on location and type of service provided. This is simply unacceptable.

We need to demand that our government takes action and requires ambulance companies to lower their bills. Emergency medical services are essential for saving lives, but they should not come at such a high cost that people are forced into debt or even worse, avoid seeking help altogether.

Lowering ambulance bills will not only benefit individuals but also reduce the burden on our healthcare system as more people will be able to afford necessary medical care without hesitation.
