Louisiana Deserves a Debate
The Issue
Louisiana voters deserve the opportunity to hear directly from both candidates seeking to represent our entire state in the United States Senate.
WDSU News has reached out to the campaigns about holding a statewide U.S. Senate debate on Hot Seat. Jamie Davis has agreed to participate. We are asking Julia Letlow to accept the invitation as well, so that Louisiana voters can hear from both candidates before casting their ballots.
A U.S. Senate seat is not a local office. The person elected will represent every parish and every community in Louisiana in Washington D.C. Their decisions will affect millions of Louisianans, regardless of where they live, what party they belong to, or how they voted in the past. The voters deserve the opportunity to hear the candidates answer the same questions, explain their positions in their own words, respond to one another, and discuss their priorities for Louisiana.
That is what public debates provide.
WDSU has an established Hot Seat format for bringing candidates before Louisiana voters. Candidates in races ranging from local offices to the Louisiana Legislature and Congress have participated in WDSU debates. WDSU continues to hold these debates during the 2026 election cycle. The U.S. Senate race deserves that same opportunity.
Indivisible Louisiana is a coalition of all 12 Indivisible groups across the state. We are asking for this debate as a matter of democratic accountability - not as an endorsement of either candidate or political party. We chose Change.org specifically for transparency, so that anyone can visit the petition at any time and see the current number of signatures for themselves.
We believe Louisianans should be able to make their own decisions at the ballot box based on information directly from the people asking for their votes.
Campaign advertisements, prepared statements, social media posts, and individual interviews can all play a role in informing voters. But a public debate gives voters something different: an opportunity to hear both candidates address the same questions, in the same forum, and engage directly with one another.
Candidates who seek to represent an entire state should be willing to make their case directly to the people they hope to represent. We are calling on Julia Letlow to accept WDSU's invitation to participate in a statewide U.S. Senate debate with Jamie Davis.
