Los Angeles: The Living City of Angels

Los Angeles: The Living City of Angels
The Issue
What if our cities could breathe? Sky Gardens transform rooftops and building facades into living ecosystems—cleaning the air, cooling streets, and restoring beauty to urban life. Sign to make Downtown LA a model for greener cities everywhere.
Inspired by the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon and visions of societies living in harmony with nature, Sky Gardens turn rooftops and vertical surfaces into elevated gardens that improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and reconnect people to nature.
Sustainability is built in through a dual-engineered watering system that collects rainwater and safely reuses filtered greywater, minimizing waste while conserving city water supplies. Existing buildings would use ultra-light, non-soil-based systems to avoid structural risk, while new construction would be designed to safely support deeper planting and tree-bearing gardens as part of the building’s load capacity.
With fragrant flowers, air-purifying plants, and vines cascading down buildings, Sky Gardens turn existing architecture into living infrastructure. Our buildings already resemble planting vessels—waiting to be filled.
By implementing this idea, we invest in cleaner air, healthier communities, and a future where people live with nature, not apart from it. Support the creation of Sky Gardens in our cities.
