Mayor Doyle and Council, please apply interim heritage controls to this treasured building

The issue

The former Burton's Carriage Workshop at 48 La Trobe Street dates to around 1868, and is a highly distinctive decorative style, such as we have precious few examples remaining in this city.

This building is now proposed to be completely demolished for yet another apartment tower.

Melbourne City Council had its chance to preserve this building in 2012, but it baulked at doing so, in spite of strong recommendation from its own heritage and planning experts in allowing the demolition of its twin building at 40 La Trobe st for an apartment tower and ignoring calls to protect the rest of the streetscape.

We call on the Lord Mayor to now protect this highly significant building through an immediate interim heritage  overlay, pending application of more permanent protections.
