London Bus Drivers demand Bill of Rights

London Bus Drivers demand Bill of Rights
The Issue
It is imperative that we garner public support to compel the Mayor of London and Transport for London to integrate a Bus Drivers’ Bill of Rights into their hazardous bus contracts. We kindly invite you to express your support by signing our petition. Commencing in 2014—
· On a daily basis, an average of three individuals find themselves hospitalised due to a preventable incident involving bus safety, with at least one case resulting from a collision;
· Approximately every five to six weeks, a fatality occurs as a result of a preventable bus safety incident, predominantly stemming from collisions;
· Over the past decade, one in ten fatalities attributed to road traffic incidents in London has involved a Transport for London bus.
· Since the election of the current Mayor, there have been 87 fatalities resulting from preventable bus safety incidents, primarily due to collisions.
· This year, there has been a tragic occurrence of more than one fatality each month. On Tuesday, 5 November 2024, London Bus Drivers orchestrated a March and Rally at TfL Headquarters to compel the acceptance of a London Bus Workers’ Bill of Rights.
1. The Right to a safe work schedule without any forced overtime or loss of pay
2. The Right to a decent and proper rest break in the working day
3. The Right to drive a safe and well-maintained vehicle
4. The Right to clean, serviced toilet and rest facilities on all bus routes
5. The Right to report safety concerns without fear of retribution from TfL or employers
6. The Right, when seriously ill and covered by a doctor's note, to not be harassed into coming into work until fit to do so
7. The Right to relevant and timely safety training
8. The Right to drive without being forced to answer radio messages and texts from Controllers whilst in motion
9. The Right to have all company rules in writing and clearly displayed
10. The Right to be treated with dignity and respect by our employers, TfL and the public
11. The Right to Working Air Cooling in our cabs in the summer heat
12. The Right to Working Heaters in our cabs in the cold of winter
By inserting the Bus Drivers' Bill of Rights into TfL's Framework Contract for Bus Services, the Mayor will restore the time that deadly Bus Contract Incentives deprive London's Professional Bus Drivers of the ability to perform their duties safely and responsibly.
To protect the lives of Londoners and ensure bus drivers have a duty of care—We, the Bus Drivers of London, demand that the Mayor of London and TfL Chair urgently instruct TfL to
(a) amend its Framework Agreement for the Provision of Bus Services in Greater London to include the London Bus Drivers' Bill of Rights in the General Terms and Conditions,
and
(b) ensure that these Rights are implemented immediately.
