This mural has been up for six years in West Palm Beach, Florida. The mural is by a local artist, Anthony Hernandez. I communicated with the artist to share my concerns about the puzzle piece and misrepresentation of a White baby boy for Autism. The artist said the mural was not done for the Autistic community, it was for the parents who question what happens to their kids after they're gone and they can't protect, defend or care for them, which is problematic. The puzzle piece is rooted in ableism and associated with the hate group, Autism $peaks. The parents are centered without consideration of the actual effects of actual Autistics. The use of the typical White baby boy perpetuates the infantilization/misperception of Autism, which leaves non-Whites, girls & AFAB adults undiagnosed/unsupported.
