Lock up to protect our children

Lock up to protect our children
The Issue
We believe that the State of Wisconsin needs to pass a gun lock law. We believe it should be mandated that when a gun is purchased, a lock mechanism needs to be given or purchased along with the gun. Currently we are one of only a handful of states that does not have this law in effect. This law would provide safety to the community by not allowing access to children and mentally disabled that cannot fully understand the consequences of guns.
By demanding that every gun has a lock box, trigger lock, or other locking mechanism we had reduce the risk of gun related death to children and teens. According to the Children’s Advocacy Organization the average number of preventable child and teen deaths due to guns in the state of Wisconsin is 31/100,000 people. These are lives ended far too early simply because there was access to guns that were not safely stored. The annual trends showed that the number of deaths keeps going up by approximately 3.1%. In the state of California preventable deaths to children and teens due to guns has decreased by 18.3% since they passed their gun lock law.
By ensuring guns are completely locked up, we are one step closer to preventing accidental deaths to children and teens. It is not only for the single child’s safety but for the safety of the communities surrounding them. If the gun lock law has been effective in the states that have passed it… Wisconsin needs to pass it too.
