Approve Senate Bill 1334 to allow Native Hawaiians to build homes in Kaka'ako

The Issue

Office of Hawaiian Affairs (Also known as “OHA”) owns 30 acres of prime real estate on the Makai (Ocean) side of Kaka’ako. They want to build residential homes that would benefit native Hawaiians. Senate Bill 1334 needed to pass as this would appeal a law from 2006 that prohibits development on the Makai side of Kaka’ako.

This bill has not advanced. Opponents say “We don’t want Waikiki to come to Kakaako Makai".

State Sen. Gil Riviere (D) who represents Haleiwa, Waialua, Kahuku said this:

“…. this is a question of where we want development and what is the right way to do things.”

Representative Scott K. Saiki (D) who represents McCully, Kaheka, Kakaako, Downtown said this:

“There is not a compelling reason for the Legislature to reverse this prohibition,”

Statistics on Native Hawaiians:

In 2015, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders accounted for only 10 percent of the state’s population but were 39 percent of the 7,620 people experiencing homelessness in Hawaii. Data from 2016 show that 42 percent of 7,921 homeless individuals in Hawaii identified as Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

In 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that 15.4 percent of Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, in comparison to 9.6 percent of non-Hispanic whites, were living at the poverty level.

Statistics on Kaka’ako:

The average sale price of a home in Kakaako was $840K last month. The average sale price per square foot in Kakaako is $899.

13+ high rises already in Kaka’ako

Goal:

To get the attention of state legislators that this is an opportunity for Native Hawaiians to get the help they need. Who more would take care of this land none other than Hawaiians?

Please support this cause to help Native Hawaiians. Support Senate Bill 1334
