The Issue

Leaving the Armed Forces can be a daunting transition filled with numerous challenges. Unfortunately, too many families are experiencing extreme pressure and anxiety as they navigate this journey, with social housing being one of the significant hurdles. As former service personnel step into civilian life, they encounter barriers that should be non-existent. It is crucial that we as a society support our veterans who have dedicated themselves to protecting our nation.

One of the critical issues is that Armed Forces Personnel leaving the Service are not given priority on the social housing register. This lack of priority is compounded by the fact that their resettlement allowance, child benefit, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) are considered as income, making it even harder for them to secure adequate housing. This needs to change in order to provide them with the security they deserve.

Statistics show that a large number of veterans and their families face housing insecurity. According to recent data from veteran support organizations, a significant percentage struggle to find permanent housing upon leaving the Armed Forces. These challenges not only affect veterans but also their families, who are caught in a cycle of uncertainty and stress.

The solution is clear: the UK government must reform social housing policies to ensure that Armed Forces Personnel are placed at the top of the social housing register without having their resettlement allowance, child benefit, DLA, or PIP considered as income. Such changes will recognize their service and sacrifice and give them a fair opportunity to seamlessly transition to civilian life.

It's time for the government to show that it values the contributions of veterans by taking concrete action. Join us in urging the UK government to amend these social housing policies and provide the support our veterans truly need.
