Demand Living Wage for Direct Support Professionals in California.

Demand Living Wage for Direct Support Professionals in California.
The Issue
The lack of DSPs (because of low pay) has created significant problems that have interfered with our ability to provide service delivery to people who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities
People who live with intellectual or developmental disabilities depend on Direct Support Professionals to support them with learning everyday living skills, socializing in the community, socialization in the day programs, volunteer opportunities, work opportunities, etc. If they do not have support, they will be limited in what they can do in life and in our society. The institutions were a living nightmare. If we lose the workforce of the DSPs, we lose hope for people with DD/IDD to move forward as a valuable part of our society.
The main reason behind the shortage of DSPs is low wages. In order to hire and retain qualified people, a livable wage is needed. Day Programs rely on the rates the state sets to determine wages. DSPs are leaving the workforce every day and staffing is almost impossible.
Fast Food workers are getting $22 an hour now. How much more important are the people who support people with disabilities? Since many programs don't have enough staff, some will be closing and leaving the participants with NOWHERE to go.
