The Issue

In the vibrant neighborhood nestled between 14th Ave West and 15th Ave West on West Wheeler Street, there is an untapped potential for connection and community enrichment. A small, overgrown space adjacent to the stairwell poses an opportunity to turn it into a welcoming hub for neighbors and pedestrians — a place where the beauty of literature can flourish, and community bonds can be strengthened.

My motivation for this petition stems from a deep desire to create community and beautify our city. I envision a small community book nook and Little Free Library that not only encourages reading and book exchanges but also offers a quiet refuge for those ascending the hill. Imagine the joy of discovering a delightful book or exchanging stories with a fellow neighbor in a serene setting under the sun.

This humble 6' x 6' area could transform into a cornerstone of community engagement and cultural sharing. However, to make this vision a reality, we need immediate action to clear the overgrown weeds and level this area. It is an achievable step towards fostering a spirit of togetherness and cultivating a beautiful, welcoming space for all.

We are calling on the local authorities, community organizations, and fellow residents to support this initiative. The Seattle Department of Transportation has issued a statement that they will be impounding this area. We are submitting for a Public Space Permit and would like your support in this community initiative.

Furthermore, Little Free Libraries have been shown to increase literacy rates and provide community members with access to books they might not otherwise have. According to the Little Free Library organization, over 100,000 such libraries exist worldwide, each serving as a beacon for learning and sharing. This initiative can add our neighborhood to this global network of literary advocates.

Join us in transforming this patch of land into something beautiful and beneficial for our community. Together, we can promote literacy, create a meeting point for ideas and dialogue, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of our surroundings.

Please sign this petition to show your support for clearing and preparing this space for a community book nook and Little Free Library. Let's create a lasting and positive impact on our neighborhood, one book at a time.
