Limit NH tow companies' fees for police-initiated tows

Limit NH tow companies' fees for police-initiated tows
The Issue
I have personally experienced the predatory practices of some towing companies in New Hampshire. Due to the state's loose laws and lack of regulation, these companies exploit people like me by charging exorbitant fees. I have had to pay thousands of dollars just to reclaim my personal belongings after my car was towed by the police, whether it was due to being wrongly parked or being involved in an accident. In one instance, the tow company demanded nearly $1,000, and I wasn't even trying to retrieve my vehicle -- they could keep it for all I cared. These outrageous demands are unacceptable and unfair to those who are already in distressing situations.
This type of exploitation is not just an inconvenience; it creates immense financial strain on people who are already facing tough circumstances. For many, having a car towed can mean missing work, struggling with transportation, or even losing vital property. Entering an unregulated environment where towing companies are free to demand excessive amounts adds insult to injury.
In New Hampshire, there is an urgent need to institute fair regulations to prevent tow companies from taking advantage of residents after police-initiated tows. This is why I am proposing that these tow companies should only be allowed to charge a reasonable base fee of $125. Additionally, the first 48 hours of storage should be free, allowing people adequate time to make arrangements. Storage costs shall not exceed $25 per day for outdoor storage and $50 per day for outdoor storage. Beyond that, they should not be able to charge more than $1 per mile for towing services.
Such regulations would not only provide relief and protection for the citizens of New Hampshire but they would also create a balanced and fair business environment for tow companies. They would ensure that people are not subjected to the whims of unregulated pricing and can reclaim their belongings without undue financial burden.
I urge you to support this petition. By signing, you are standing up against unfair business practices and advocating for the rights and welfare of the people of New Hampshire. Let's work together to regulate towing fees and prevent exploitative charges by tow companies. Please sign and share this petition with your friends, family, and community members.
