Limit lap lanes to 4 swimmers at təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic Centre
The Issue
I am an avid swimmer and use the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre in New Westminster daily. It has become increasingly difficult and potentially dangerous to continue enjoying swimming due to overcrowded lanes, especially on weekends. I've found myself sharing a single lane with up to eight other swimmers, making it not only difficult to swim properly but also risky for everyone involved.
On weekends, the situation exacerbates as the centre allocates only three lanes for public use, with the rest being reserved for swim clubs. This results in unavoidable congestion and frustration for dedicated lap swimmers who wish to practice safely and efficiently. A limit must be placed on the number of swimmers allowed per lane to ensure a secure and enjoyable environment for all.
Research supports that overcrowding in swimming lanes can lead to increased accidents, collisions, and fatigue among swimmers. The Swimming Canada Safety Guidelines suggest a maximum of four swimmers per lane to optimize space and reduce the risk of injury.
I am proposing that the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre implement a rule to restrict each swimming lane to a maximum of four people. This will help alleviate the risks associated with overcrowded lanes and provide a more effective swimming experience for everyone.
Please help us urge the management at the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre to prioritize swimmer safety by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure a safer, more enjoyable environment for all swimmers. Your signature matters.
