Limit fireworks in Marion, Iowa
The Issue
Ever since fireworks were legalized in Iowa, my neighborhood in Marion, for the duration of the summer months, feels like a war zone. My home, a sanctuary, is now disrupted nightly by explosive booms and flashes. As a pet owner, it is heart-wrenching to witness the terror induced by these relentless fireworks in my beloved 5-year-old dog. Despite medication, she trembles uncontrollably, hides, and displays severe distress every night. Her suffering echoes the plight of many pets in our community, whose owners struggle helplessly to comfort them during this onslaught.
The impact is widespread and profound, affecting not only pets but also our veterans who have bravely served our nation. For those veterans suffering from PTSD, each firework is a reminder of past traumas, negating the peace they have fought so hard to attain. This is not how we should honor those who have given so much for our freedom.
While fireworks are a part of celebration, their current restrictions have severe consequences for many community members. Marion deserves a balanced approach where celebrations do not equate to suffering.
I propose implementing reasonable restrictions on when fireworks can be legally discharged in our neighborhoods. Limiting fireworks to a specific time window and reducing the number of days they can be used would make a significant difference. This initiative would allow us to celebrate while preserving the peace and safety of all community members, including our pets and veterans.
I propose that our city members limit the use of fireworks to one day and between 8:00 pm to 10:00pm. Even the public fireworks do not go on for days and all night.
Please, for the well-being of our pets, the mental health of our veterans, and the overall tranquility of our neighborhoods, support this petition to limit the hours and number of days of fireworks in Marion, Iowa. Join us in creating a more harmonious environment for everyone. Sign this petition to make a change today.
