The Issue

As someone who has seen the distress and damage caused by the widespread use of fireworks, I feel it's high time we drew the line. The wide-ranging effects these fireworks have on the vulnerable segments of our society—including the elderly, people with autism, special needs, and PTSD sufferers—cannot be overlooked. The harm they wreak on our animals and wildlife is an additional severe concern. I have witnessed the antisocial behaviour they inspire, with fireworks launched recklessly at emergency services, buses, and within our residential streets.

In the UK alone, there are over 4,500 related injuries that occur each year due to fireworks mishandling, highlighting the level of risk associated with their broad public use (source: Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). They also contribute dramatically to noise and environmental pollution. According to a study by Environmental Science & Technology, fireworks cause a 42% increase in particulate matter on the days they are heavily used, leading to poor air quality (source: Environmental Science & Technology).

Therefore, I propose a solid yet feasible solution: restrict the sale and use of fireworks to the general public and limit their use to display-only purposes on two nights of the year – 5th November (Guy Fawkes Night) & New Year's Eve. It's a balance between continuing time-honoured traditions while ensuring the well-being of our people, animals, and environment. It's time we chose care over chaos.
