Limit Firework Sales to Organised Events for Animal and Human Safety

The Issue

As a devoted animal lover and dog owner, I am deeply concerned about the pervasive harm inflicted by unrestricted firework use. Each year, our wildlife, pets, and farm animals suffer traumatic effects of loud fireworks displays. The unexpected booms can cause not only physical harm but also significant emotional distress to these creatures and to young children and people living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The unrestricted availability of fireworks also poses considerable risk as they can be dangerous and deadly when mishandled or used maliciously.

The RSPCA reports that 45% of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks, indicating the vast scale of the problem. This distress is likewise true for farm animals and wildlife too. Moreover, hospital admissions related to firework injuries increased by 88% in England since 2009-10 (NHS Digital, 2018), reflecting the significant concern for human safety.

Therefore, I urge for the ban of public fireworks sales and advocate for the use of silent fireworks during organized displays limited to November 5th (maybe one weekend day either side of November 5th) and NYE. This approach would significantly reduce the toll taken on our animals and vulnerable populations.

Such change would not rob us of the joy and wonder that fireworks bring but reframe them in a manner that respects all members of our communities. Let’s rally for a kinder alternative that upholds the safety and wellbeing of our beloved animals and fellow humans alike. Please sign this petition.
