Limit Australian social media ban to future generations

The issue

Growing up in the digital age, social media has become an integral part of me and thousands of other Australian teenagers’ lives. It's where we connect, share, and express ourselves freely. However, the proposed Australian Social Media Ban, which could indiscriminately affect all individuals under 16, threatens to disrupt our lives, limit our freedoms, and disconnect us from the digital world we've always known.

Implementing such a blanket ban fails to consider the nuances of today’s interconnected society. Many teenagers like me use social media to stay informed about global events, participate in educational activities, and cultivate social networks that are crucial for personal development. Banning it entirely would eliminate these opportunities and stifle our growth.

Instead of imposing a nationwide prohibition, we propose a reasonable and more balanced approach: Enact the Social Media Ban for children born in 2026 onwards, applicable only until they reach the age of 16. This would provide a transitional period where society and educational frameworks can adapt to mitigate the impacts of reduced social media access, while those of us who are already integrated into these platforms can continue our interactions uninterrupted.

Statistically, 80% of teenagers globally use social media, and many derive educational and social benefits from these platforms. A 2022 study found that 70% of teens feel that social media provides them with a support system they otherwise wouldn’t have. Banning social media could sever these vital connections.

We do support a social media ban for those under 16. We also believe that children and young teenagers deserve and need a childhood where they can play and learn without the heavy influence of social media. However, it is unrealistic and cruel to remove social media from the hands of thousands of teenagers when they’ve already grown up with these services.

We urge lawmakers and the Australian government to consider a phased implementation for any social media ban, focusing on future generations while allowing current teenagers to continue using these platforms responsibly. By adopting this approach, we respect the current youth’s digital experiences and prepare future generations for a different upbringing.

Please support this petition to ensure a fair and balanced solution to the proposed social media ban that acknowledges the realities of today's digital age. Join us in advocating for a policy that recognizes the value of social media for current and future youth by signing this petition.
