Limit Abortion Flyer Door Drops in Airdrie, AB
The Issue
Abortion flyers are becoming more and more frequent across our city. They are being left in doorways for people to find as they walk in and out of their households. No permission is being requested and "no flyers/solicitation" signs are being ignored. Our homes are our property and we should have the say about what we do and do not want to receive.
We respect the right to freedom of speech and that there are vastly different opinions on this matter but as citizens of Airdrie, we should still have an option to choose whether or not to receive these graphic imaged flyers. Young children are finding these flyers and families who may be triggered by loss or grief are receiving them without warning and that's not okay. We shouldn't have to explain to young children who find these flyers what they are. We shouldn't make a teenager feel bad about their choices because they don't conform to the opinions of others. Pregnant woman and families, shouldn't have to find these, especially if they recently had a loss of any kind. We need to change the way this message is being spread giving everyone options.
Instead of proposing a full ban on these flyers, we need to look at Calgary for the example they have set. We need to put strict limitations on these flyers and their distributors. Here's what we should propose to be fair and equitable to all (Similar to Calgary's newest bylaw):
- Flyers must be concealed in an opaque envelope with a graphic content warning.
- Flyers must include the name and address of the sender when delivered to homes.
- $1,000.00 fine if violated
