Lights & Music-NOT Fireworks on LA coast! Protect Pets, Wildlife & Veterans - Save Lives!
The Issue
Every 4th of July there are numerous deaths and harms inflicted on wild animals, pets and Veterans of War when loud blasts from fireworks begin. We want to have a SAFE and SANE 4th of July celebration on the coast of Los Angeles - so that we can truly enjoy this day and not dread it, as we usually do.
We are asking the LA County Board of Supervisors, and especially Supervisor Holly Mitchell, to direct the Beaches & Harbors Department to switch from harmful, dangerous, toxic and polluting fireworks to LIGHTS & MUSIC - with a drone show or other type of light and music show that would be better for us all, and especially better for:
- Pet Owners, who increasingly must spend money to calm their animals and sometimes lose them as they attempt to escape from the loud blasts;
- Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve - the ONLY State Ecological Reserve in all of Los Angeles County. There are dozens of rare and endangered species that rely on this habitat, and many thousands of animals that are harmed by the loud blasts and the poisonous chemicals that make up the fireworks' colors;
- Veterans of War who suffer from PTSD and are brought back to horrendous situations when their bodies and minds experience the blasts;
- Families and neighbors who breathe in the toxic chemicals that remain in the air after the 20-30 minute display is over;
- Marine life that suffer from chemicals and pollution debris that fall from the sky with each blast that looks pretty above, but is not so pretty below - including Dolphins which rely on echo-location for swimming, for detecting danger and for finding food - the blasts can harm them irreparably.
