Lift the phone and electronic device policy in Utah schools

Lift the phone and electronic device policy in Utah schools
The Issue
As a student in Utah, I can personally attest to the struggles faced by myself and many of my peers under the current restrictions on personal electronic device use in schools. Recently, the passage of SB 178 has made it even more challenging for students to access tools that are crucial for many of us, including those who suffer from disorders, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. It is disheartening to think that the legislation now restricts not just phones but even harmless devices like MP3 players, which pose no threat or disruption to the educational environment.
For students affected by anxiety and other mental health issues, personal electronic devices can serve as essential coping mechanisms. They provide a sense of security and a way to manage our mental health throughout the school day. For some, this means being able to listen to calming music on an iPod, or having the ability to reach out quickly in moments of distress or crisis via a phone call or text.
Furthermore, this policy fails to take into account the broader educational benefits and opportunities for learning that technology can present. Digital devices have become integral to modern education, empowering students to engage with diverse learning resources and participate seamlessly in hybrid and online learning environments. By keeping these devices accessible in schools, we open up possibilities for enriched educational experiences and better prepare students for the technology-driven world.
Rather than imposing blanket bans, schools should be empowered to implement balanced policies that allow limited and supervised use of electronic devices, such as during breaks or specific educational activities. This tailored approach respects both the need for a conducive learning environment and the individual needs of students.
I urge the Utah legislature and educational policymakers to reconsider the current restrictions under SB 178. Let's find a way to use technology responsibly and inclusively within our schools, ensuring that all students have the tools they need to succeed academically and personally. Please sign this petition to support a more balanced and supportive phone and personal electronic use policy in Utah schools.
