I am an Edmonton resident, deeply rooted in Arabic culture. The shisha, or hookah, is more than just a pastime for us; it's a significant part of our heritage and social fabric. Unfortunately, the City of Edmonton has imposed a ban on shisha smoking in public places since July 2020. This ban not only affects our cultural expression but also impacts local businesses that rely heavily on shisha sales.

Shisha smoking is an age-old tradition that dates back centuries in Middle Eastern cultures. It's not just about inhaling smoke; it's about community bonding, storytelling and preserving our traditions.

I met Edmonton’s Mayor and he said “We had a meeting for public to lift the ban but you never showed up”

Did any of us know about this meeting ?

We understand the health risks associated with smoking and fully support regulations to protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke exposure. However, we believe there can be a compromise where designated areas for shisha smoking can be established while still maintaining public health standards.
