On September 1, 2026, they were held at knife point for their money just outside the downtown square—a location many of us frequent. This terrifying incident forced me to reflect deeply on how we can protect ourselves better without resorting to extreme measures.
When threats like this arise, the goal isn't to inflict lethal harm but to ensure personal safety while minimizing injury to both parties. As I searched for non-lethal means of self-defense, I was immediately drawn to the prospect of using brass knuckles. They seemed like a viable option, allowing someone to defend themselves effectively and with minimal risk of causing life-threatening injuries.
To my shock, I discovered that brass knuckles are banned in Northwest Arkansas, and possessing them is equated to having a lethal weapon or bomb components. Yet, a knife, which can escalate a situation to life and death in an instant, is legally permissible.
This disparity in the law implies that individuals are left with only two clear choices when defending themselves: use their bare hands or opt for potentially lethal force with a knife or a gun. This doesn't seem right or just, especially not in the face of traumatic experiences like my friend's.
