The Issue

Since the start of the 2025-2026 school year, Arizona schools have been heavily enforcing HB 2484, a law that limits the use of phones and social media services.

The ban of phones in schools have been heavily criticized and disliked by students nationwide and here in Arizona, as it presents issues with safety and school work. Putting a ban on phones prevent students from contacting their parents or legal guardians in case of any emergencies, which can pose a safety risk.

As an Arizona student myself, I use my phone to exchange school-related digital forms to my parents, like permission slips, syllabus papers, and school notices.

Many schools and extracurriculars use tools like Band and Remind to alert students of updates and meetings. Some teachers use tools like Google Classroom and Canvas that allow for students to manage their assignments on their phones. In a digital age, phones can benefit students and allow them to easily manage their school, home, and work life.

Many teachers use the wall pockets and require students to put their phone in it, but with the worry of losing your phone or having it stolen, I think wall pockets pose a much higher risk than having it in your backpack or pocket.

I think schools should allow phones to be used, as it can benefit students and managing their school life.
