The Issue

I've been a student at Lake Park High School for three years now, and throughout my time here, the art room has been a sanctuary for me. Since my freshman year, I've cherished the moments spent there during my free periods. It's been more than just a room; it's been a welcoming space where I've always felt free to express my thoughts respectfully. The supportive art teachers and the freedom to bring friends into this nurturing environment has been amazing, offering a break from the often stressful atmosphere of the lunchroom.

However, recent administrative decisions have introduced strict regulations regarding the availability of art rooms to students during their free periods. This change has affected many of us who relied on the art room as a safe space. It' cant be argued that art education and expression are crucial, not only for creativity but for emotional well-being, and limiting access to these resources can hinder student development.

Art teachers at Lake Park High School have always been a pillar of support, unlike the core subject teachers, who, due to their busy schedules, cannot afford the same personal engagement. The art room provides an essential space for students to unwind and receive the encouragement they need to thrive.

The current restrictions conflict with the core values of Lake Park High School, which prioritizes the  development and well-being of its students. By restoring open access to the art rooms, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to benefit from this vital support system.

Our proposal is simple: Allow students access to the art rooms during their free periods, ensuring teacher supervision and safety protocols are upheld. This adjustment can be structured in a way that addresses concerns about space management while still allowing students to utilize their time productively.

A supportive environment is essential for students’ mental health and academic success, especially in the pressured environment of high school. We must preserve spaces that foster personal growth and creative expression.

We urge the Lake Park High School administration to reconsider these restrictions and work with students and teachers to find a balanced approach rather then blatant restriction. Together, let's ensure that the art room remains an essential resource for all students seeking creativity and comfort in their school environment.

Please sign this petition to lift restrictions on art room access and support our students' freedom of creative expression and emotional well-being at Lake Park High School.
