The Issue

Without any consultation, no publicity, and very little time for feedback submissions, Lethbridge School Division is changing school boundaries AGAIN. This affects many students across the city, but particularly at École Nicholas Sheran, where French Immersion was moved just 4 years ago (formerly it was solely at Agnes Davidson on the south side). This was a welcome development for many West side families and was met with a year of consultation and discussion; however, a reversal of this decision a short 4 years later is trying to get passed under the radar. They know this will be an unpopular decision; students currently enrolled in French Immersion at Nicholas Sheran did so only because it was on the West side. Parents now face a choice - pull their kids out of French (which won’t help the overcrowding on the West side), bus their kids for up to an hour each way every day, or move - none of which are good options. This Is going to have a detrimental effect on the neighbourhood, especially those close enough to walk who will now either need to move or bus, and the close-knit community feeling that the school currently enjoys. We need more consultation and a consideration to grandfather the kids currently enrolled in French out of grade 5 before making this change. Don’t make our kids pay for the Division’s poor planning! Let’s take the time and care to figure out a plan that works for all. At the very least, lengthen the time for consultation.

And if you haven’t yet, PLEASE provide official feedback to the board: https://boundaryreview.schoolsites.ca/
