Let Yellow Taxis Share the Bus Lanes

Let Yellow Taxis Share the Bus Lanes
The Issue
In London, Paris and Berlin city cabs can use the Bus Lane. Even our own San Francisco allows it. It's a fantastic idea!
Think about it:
- Yellow taxis are really a part of New York City's Public Transportation system that allowed us to have the fewest per capita cars in the country. As per CEOs for Cities, New Yorkers average about 23 cars per 100 residents compared to about 78 cars per 100 residents for the rest of the country.
- Taxis are metered and drivers get dumped by riders when stuck in traffic, losing precious earning time, gasoline and money.
- It takes so much money to get a taxi medallion. By law, there are 13,587 taxis in New York City and each taxi must have a medallion affixed to it. The cost is decided by fixed supply and demand.
- Even at the current approximate cost of $140,000, it has become increasingly hard to recover the investment because people prefer fixed fares in Uber, Lyft and similar rideshare vehicles. Those who bought medallions at or near a high of $1million were left with a lot of debt with the introduction of about 80,000 ride share vehicles. Cabbie suicides are well-known.
- Bus Lanes in NYC are highly underused. It is so annoying to be stuck in traffic on Fifth Avenue or the 34th Street while there are two Bus Lanes mostly empty next to you.
Our NYC cabbies deserve better!
Allowing NYC Yellow and Boro Green taxis share the Bus Lane will:
- Help more efficient us of the underutilized Bus Lanes, thereby reducing congestion.
- Reduce congestion by speeding up taxis that are always cutting lanes.
- Increase taxi ridership and help cabbies sustain their incomes.
Please sign this petition and let us together request the NYC Department of Transportation, the Taxi and Limousine Commission, and the Mayor, Mr. Zohran Mamdani to ALLOW YELLOW TAXIS TO USE THE BUS LANES IN ALL FIVE BOROS.
