Let Us Park on Our Own Property: Remove Ordinance 5-137 (b)(23)

Let Us Park on Our Own Property: Remove Ordinance 5-137 (b)(23)
The Issue
We are calling on Owensboro to repeal Ordinance 5-137 (b)(23), which unfairly prohibits residents from parking their own vehicles in their own yards. This is a direct violation of our rights as property owners, and we demand that this overreaching and burdensome ordinance be removed.
As residents and taxpayers of Owensboro, we believe that Ordinance 5-137(b)(23)—which prohibits parking vehicles in one's own yard—is an unjust and unnecessary restriction on our private property rights.
We purchase our homes, pay taxes on our land, and maintain our properties. The city should not have the authority to dictate where we park our vehicles on our own property. This ordinance disproportionately affects working-class families, renters, and homeowners with limited parking space, forcing many into fines or expensive modifications.
This is not a safety issue—it’s government overreach.
Here's why this ordinance needs to be repealed:
- It violates our rights as property owners.
- It creates an unnecessary financial burden.
- It is rooted in aesthetic preference, not public safety.
- It disproportionately targets lower-income households.
- Every citizen should have the right to use their land in a reasonable way that does not harm others. Parking a personal vehicle on personal property does not warrant city intervention.
We, the undersigned, urge city leaders to repeal Ordinance 5-137 (b)(23) and stop penalizing the very people who work hard to afford homes and vehicles in this community.
Support your neighbors. Respect our rights. End this unfair ordinance now.
