The Cuban women’s national volleyball team has been denied visas to travel to Puerto Rico for the NORCECA Final Four tournament, a vital competition that determines qualification for the Volleyball Nations League.

These athletes — many of whom have trained for years for this moment — are being punished not because of any wrongdoing, but because of a sweeping visa restriction targeting Cuba and 11 other countries under a new policy from the Trump administration.

One player, Laura Suárez, said it best: “It’s really disappointing not to be able to participate in the competition, which is what I’ve been preparing myself for.”
