As Singapore celebrates its 60th birthday, we hope that we can be proud of our achievements for animal welfare. But sadly, we cannot. There is still a lot more to be done.
We need to be a society with empathy and compassion for strays and embrace coexistence between humans and animals. We have to stop treating wildlife like celebrities but treat strays like diseased beggars. Animal welfare must not be just talk only, but most importantly we want to see actions.
Change must happen for things to improve. Why are we using signages that say “Beware of free-roaming dogs” that create unnecessary fear? This is 2025. There are many better ways to communicate a message.
We are Singapore. The animals on our land are Singapawreans. They have every right to share the land we live in. It is us humans who took their land so we should learn to coexist. Public safety should not be the easy lame excuse for removing them just because we cannot tolerate their existence, unless there is a real and imminent danger.
Let’s continue to fight for better animal welfare. Let’s hope that we can see significant improvements soon, not 60 years later.

<A brief update on the Bidadari Dogs - it’s been almost 2 months since the meeting with NParks. The ‘more sturdy and permanent’ barrier is still not installed.>
