Let Talent Be Seen, Not Bought

Let Talent Be Seen, Not Bought
The issue
Across Australia, many skilled young athletes share the same problem: the ambition to play professionally is overshadowed by the costs attached to progressing through national pathways. Entering these programs often depends less on talent and more on who can afford the fees, travel, and ongoing expenses. This system shuts out capable athletes and slows the country’s development on the international stage, while other nations continue to advance because access isn’t dictated by money.
As a volleyball player working toward a professional career, I face this barrier daily. The ability is there—but the financial load attached to reaching the next level means talent often goes unnoticed. It’s frustrating to know that potential isn’t the issue; affordability is.
The expenses tied to selection camps, national trials, travel, accommodation, and compulsory training programs quickly build up. For many families, these costs compete with everyday essentials. No young athlete should have to choose between their dreams and their household’s basic needs.
This is why change is necessary. Pathways to state and national teams should be built around merit, not financial capacity. Support systems—such as reduced trial fees, travel subsidies, transparent funding options, and accessible development programs—would allow athletes to progress based on skill rather than income.
By supporting this petition, you are backing a future where Australian sport grows because every talented athlete has a fair chance to be seen. Removing financial barriers strengthens our national teams, our sporting culture, and the opportunities available to young people across the country.
Together, we can create a system where potential is recognized for what it is, not for what it costs.
