Let's protect Weston: No to extreme density increase in Bonaventure
Let's protect Weston: No to extreme density increase in Bonaventure
The Issue
With great alarm we have learned of the proposal to modify the Land Use Plan in the Bonaventure Golf Course area, changing the zoning from Residential Irregular (RI 5) to RI (28.44). This change would allow the construction of the project "The Place at Bonaventure and Bonaventure Country Club", with an increase of more than **460% in residential density**.
This project directly threatens the stability, security and quality of life that have defined Weston since its creation:
- **More traffic:** 170–255 daily trips per acre.
- ** Overpopulated schools:** already close to their capacity.
- **Greater risk of flooding:** more waterproof surfaces.
- **Additional pressure on emergency services. **
- **Incompatible buildings** with low density neighborhoods.
- **Irreversible precedent** for future developments.
The **official data** of the UF-BEBR and the City of Weston show that the population should remain stable around 68,000 inhabitants. However, the **2024 Census** estimates 70,674 and **World Population Review** projects 72,007 for 2026, reflecting accelerated growth as a result of zoning changes that allow high-density constructions.
In addition, testimonies from residents such as those of the **St Andrews** community show the real impact: the loss of natural views and green spaces enjoyed by all. The official maps confirm that the affected plots are part of the golf course and recreational areas that will disappear if this project is approved.
**What we asked for:**
That the Weston City Commission ** rejects the modification of the Land Use Plan and the rezonification of the Bonaventure golf course to turn it into high-density multi-family homes**, preserving the green areas and respecting Weston's original planning as a low-density city.
👉 Weston was designed as a planned city, with green spaces and quality of life. Let's not allow it to be degraded by projects that prioritize density over community well-being
