Let’s Make Higher Education A Right And Not A Privilege

The Issue

I am a 26 year-old student, who after 5 years decided to go back into college to finish my bachelor's degree. I have personally known what it is like to juggle a full-time job and also be a student full-time, it is not an easy task, but it is almost impossible now to be able to go dedicate all your time to school without working. The economy gets getting worse, things more expensive, including higher education, so succeeding seems almost impossible. We have to choose, do we want to attempt to apply for loans and be thousands of dollars in debt, or would we rather have a regular job and not be in debt.

Higher education has evolved in a way that it makes student think critically about society, it helps us grow personally and intellectually. Yet, despite its transformative potential, higher education is increasingly seen as out of reach for many, especially with the rising cost of tuition and mounting student debt.

Less people are choosing to opt out of college because they can't afford to work and go to school at the same time, and that is the only option for them. The future of higher education depends on our collective efforts to fix these financial barriers and make education something everyone can accomplish.

It is time for educational leaders, communities, and policymakers to come to come together and prioritize the accessibility of higher education to all students. We must come together and advocate for reforms to reduce the financial burden on students, including increasing investment in need-based financial aid, lowering costs, and creating more affordable pathways to degree completion. The future of higher education depends on our collective efforts to fix these financial barriers and make education something everyone can accomplish.

Many years ago we believed America had the greatest blessing of all, and it was higher education for students including women, but it seems like higher education is becoming a privilege as time goes on.

We must act now, let’s make higher education a right and not a privilege or a burden!
