Let's Give our Children a Headstart In Life by Incorporating Life Skills Classes in CMS

The Issue

Let's bring back basic life skills classes into our schools. Why is our curriculum only focused on Math, Reading, Social Studies and Science, when there are dozens of other life skills that our children need to also learn in order to function as an intelligent, self sufficient adult in the real world, such as Basic Car Maintenance, Car Repairs and Car Insurance, how to Budget and learn Money Management Skills, learning what a 401k is, Personal credit and Credit Cards, being First Aid and CPR Certified to save lives, Learning about Mental Health/disabilities, Manners/Etiquette, knowing how to self regulate and deal with our emotions and feelings, expanding our basic knowledge of relationships/unhealthy vs. healthy relationships, how to create a Resume, Self-defense, local laws, Time Management, Cooking, Home Repair and Home Owner's Insurance, More in depth knowledge of parenting and raising children, how to recognize signs of abuse and learning from failures/shortcomings. While The 4 Basic courses offered ARE important, the life skills I just identified are JUST as Important and need more awareness. Aren't we supposed to help guide, advocate and teach our children, the future? Shouldn't we want our children to get the best education possible and to be well rounded having a vast variety of skills they can take with them for the rest of their lives? So many young people are clueless (no fault of their own) when it comes to issues involving Money Management or how to change a tire, more importantly, how to even survive without the use of any technology. If we can't provide our upcoming generation with the essential life skills, I would say we are in for trouble. When we are old and need to visit the doctor more often, these are going to be our doctors, our surgeons, our Police Officers, our Nurses. If they haven't learned these very basic, but oh so crucial skills, would you feel comfortable letting them operate on you to save your life if they're unknowingly suffering from their own mental issues, possibly having an anxiety attack suddenly halfway through your surgery? If we make classes like these accessible, there will be many of those children treating their mental health conditions early on, therefore, they will be in a better mental state to properly do their jobs and live a better quality of life in general. Things have to change. We have to do better and BE better for our children. Why NOT teach them as many skills as we can? Why does there have to be a limit on what we teach them? Even if we can  implement just 2 or 3 of my examples in our schools, that alone would make a world of difference. And as a parent myself, I can't possibly see why anyone would object to this request. Obviously, teachers would need additional training and a pay raise to make this even possible, but we owe it to the children.

Angela InmanPetition StarterI'm well aware of all the road blocks I'll face if this even goes as far as I want this to. I'm doing this because I see a true genuine concern in the American Education System.
