Let's get this trail open!
The Issue
I am sure you all know that we have had an issue on the trail system in Bennington, NH. Out of nowhere, the Railroad Bridge going to Alberto’s was gated off year-round for the past five years. Sadly, about 8 years ago the Hillsborough Nightriders put new decking across the bridge at the request of the State. Every year we hear more excuses as to why it is not open! The latest excuse was the paperwork stalled out on someone’s desk at DOT. This is obviously not true; no one takes a year to sign something. I, myself, have reached out to the State offering my club’s help to pay for any repairs necessary or any test necessary to get this open. When we did the redecking, we used heavy equipment and at that time we drove a 5-ton wrecker across it with a load of pressure treated lumber that was the old school test!
So, no more excuses!! The snowmobilers of New Hampshire want that corridor to be reopened for this winter season. The railroad bed leads all the way to Massachusetts and in the past has had enormous amounts of traffic. Unfortunately, since this has been closed, the snowmobile club located in the Greenfield area, the Monadnock Trail Breakers, has folded up when their trail system went no where from gating this Bridge! That being said, my club, the Hillsborough Nightriders, will take over grooming to the Greenfield State Park and further if necessary. I will be sending this letter to all the State agencies whom it concerns as well as News and social media.
We, the Snowmobilers of New Hampshire, expect no more delays in this matter. Please stop by Livingston’s at 136 Henniker Street in Hillsboro, to sign a petition in favor of opening this trail up that we can submit to the state.
Thank you for your support.
