Let's Get Britain Building - NOW!

The Issue

Britain is running out of homes — and time.
Families can’t find affordable homes. Small builders are being forced out of business. Construction workers are leaving faster than we can replace them. This isn’t just about building new houses and refurbishing homes — it’s about jobs, skills, local communities and making sure we've got the trades to call on when something goes wrong and we need their help to fix the problem ... a leaky roof, a dripping tap, issue with the electrics, a burst pipe ... the list goes on. And it isn’t a future problem — it’s happening now.

Britain and Northern Ireland are short of millions of homes, and the system meant to fix it is broken. Lengthy planning delays, rising costs, skills shortages, and a lack of buyer confidence mean we are building far fewer homes than the country needs. If nothing changes, communities shrink, local builders disappear, and home ownership becomes impossible for the next generation.

This petition calls on the Government to act — now. We are asking for three practical changes that builders, tradespeople, and communities urgently need:

  1. Help people afford homes - Real financial incentives so people can buy, fix, and improve homes.
  2. Make building rules easier and faster - A faster, simpler planning system, using clear rules and modern technology.
  3. Encourage people to become builders and tradespeople - Stronger support for construction careers, to train and attract the workers we need.

These changes would unlock stalled projects, protect local builders, create jobs, get homes built where people need them most, and with people spending - putting money into the local economy.

YOU CAN HELP BY DOING THESE 3 EASY THINGS:

👉 Stand with builders and families — add your name (signing the petition is free, you don’t have to donate any money).

⚠️ You’ll need to click the confirmation link in your email — otherwise your signature won’t count (it only takes a couple of minutes).

👉 Share the petition with other people (so more people support).

If every person who views this petition signs, we go to Parliament with undeniable proof — your name matters!

Want to know more?
People want a safe, nice place to live, but there just aren’t enough homes.

  • We are missing millions of new homes (6.5 million).
  • It takes a very long time and costs a lot of money to get permission to build houses.
  • Many small builders have had to stop working, so there are fewer people to build homes (fewer than 2,000 small and micro housebuilders still in business - down from 9,000 in 2008).
  • There are not enough trained tradespeople, like builders, plumbers, and electricians (225,000 needed; 25% of tradespeople set to retire in the next 5 years).
  • Some houses are empty and could be fixed up, but that’s not happening fast enough (630,000 vacant homes, and that's just in England).
  • Many families are worried about money and their jobs, so they are nervous about buying a home. And if they want to, they need Government support to buy.

Why this matters

Builders and construction workers help everyone by making homes, schools, and places to live. When building is strong, communities grow and people do better.

  1. Help people afford homes - So it's easier for families to buy or improve their homes.
  2. Make building rules easier and faster - So builders don’t wait years and spend lots of money just to get permission.
  3. Encourage people to become builders and tradespeople - So there are enough skilled workers to build, refurbish and look after our homes.

👉 Add your name today — because doing nothing guarantees nothing changes.
