Let Parents Have A Choice in Their Children's Education

Thank you everyone for all the calls that you made to the Assembly members as well as to the Senators!!!!  And thank you to all those who went to the District of Choice Rally in Diamond Bar!  I know that many drove from very far.  Thank you for coming!!!

1.) Current Situation as of Monday, September 5

The bill to renew District of Choice, SB 1432,  is dead but at the same time with all of your efforts, AB 1771, the grandfathering bill, did not move forward.

Jody Roberto, the District Director of Senator Bob Huff's Office sent this email, which I will post here:

First, I would like to congratulate all of you who have worked tirelessly to have your voice heard on District of Choice.   Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in saving SB 1432, Senator Huff’s bill to extend District of Choice. However, your efforts helped to stop AB 1771, the grandfathering bill, from moving forward.

The following joint statement released by Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang & Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez regarding the District of Choice program appears to be a good sign.

JOINT STATEMENT by Assemblymembers Ling Ling Chang and Lorena Gonzalez:

"We had a constructive conversation today on the District of Choice school program. We agreed that while we have different opinions on how the program might operate, we also agreed that we will work with a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers in order to resolve these differences. We also want to ensure parents that no child will be removed from their schools this current school year. We will work on the details of the program between now and when the program is set to end next year. We believe that education should not be a partisan issue and will work together to make sure our schools are working for all kids.”

Although AB 1771 is no longer a concern,  you should still be watching and organizing for next year.  The legislature is not in session in the Fall but it is important that you remain motivated to take action in the new legislative season which officially begins December 5, 2016.

As most of you are aware, Senator Huff is terming out  and will no longer be able to work on this issue.  We know that Assembly woman Ling Ling Chang  will be working  with her legislative colleagues in the coming months to hopefully get off to a good start in January.

Please feel free to share the joint statement with your friends and other DOC parents.   Encourage your DOC friends to join the “Save District of Choice” FB page (a parent run page for all districts) so they can stay up to date.  There is a District of Choice website being created as a resource for DOC supporters.  We will keep you updated as that progresses.

Additionally, you may want to organize captains at all of your school sites to be the school leader for DOC.  We recommend having Teruni Evans as the DOC primary contact who will work with the school leaders.  Teruni was the organizer of the very successful parent rally in Diamond Bar last week.  As Teruni receives information, she can then pass it on to the school captains.  This will be a more efficient way of getting information out to all the schools.

Christopher Finarelli, Capitol Director for Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang, will be the contact for District of Choice moving forward.

His email is christopher.finarelli@asm.ca.gov and he can be reached at (916) 319-2055.

You may be interested in the following stories on DOC.  The first article was written by a DOC student from Oak Park and is the most comprehensive, well written piece that we have seen on District of Choice.  Congratulations Nick Burt, Oak Park Senior, on your excellent work.

2.) Action Plans

a.) If you have facebook, please join the Save the District Facebook Page.

b.) I don't know if the District of Choice website is ready yet, but if I found out, I will send an update.

c.) If you have any questions, regarding District of Choice,  please contact Christopher Finarelli in Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang's office. His email is christopher.finarelli@asm.ca.gov and he can be reached at (916) 319-2055.

d.) Following the advice of Jody Roberto, the District Director of Senator Bob Huff's office, please start organizing captains at your school sites and get in touch with Teruni Evans who can gather information about District of Choice and will relay that information to the captains.

Thank you everyone for your support !!
