Let Michigan Farmers Sell Raw Milk Directly to Consumers

The Issue

For generations, Michigan families have trusted their local farmers to provide fresh, wholesome food. But right now, outdated laws make it illegal for small farmers to sell raw milk and raw dairy products directly to the people who want to buy them—unless they navigate a legal loophole through herd-sharing.

A new bill introduced by State Rep. Matt Maddock would change that by legalizing direct-to-consumer raw milk sales—allowing farmers to sell at farm stands, farmers markets, or right from their farms, with proper labeling and safety protocols in place. This change wouldn’t force anyone to drink raw milk—it would simply give Michiganders the freedom to choose.

The people who know the risks and still want to buy raw milk for themselves or their families should be allowed to do so—just like they’re allowed to eat raw oysters, sushi, or undercooked eggs. Adults make informed decisions about food every day. Why should raw milk be treated any differently?

This law would also give struggling small farmers a lifeline. Under current rules, it’s nearly impossible for small-scale dairy producers to compete with industrial operations. They face expensive licensing, restrictive processing requirements, and limited market access. Legalizing raw milk sales is one step toward restoring balance and fairness in our food system—and giving local farmers a chance to survive.

Critics say it’s a public health issue, but safety measures like pathogen testing, herd health checks, and clear labeling would still be required under the new bill. In fact, small farmers have a strong incentive to produce safe, high-quality milk—because their customers are also their neighbors.

Let’s trust consumers. Let’s support farmers.
