Success! You may have already come across the news that Immigration Minister David Coleman MP has used his discretionary powers to grant permanent residency to Kinley and his family. (Follow the link below to find the first news story) Needless to say the family is ecstatic and greatly relieved that they now have a secure future in Australia. Parents Tshering and Jangchu will continue to provide for their sons while working hard in aged care and early childhood respectively and both their sons will be able to continue their education uninterrupted. Most importantly, Kinley will continue to have access to Auslan, his sole means of communication and learning. This is indeed, a just outcome for the family and a great outcome for Australia, as this family have, are and will continue to contribute to our country in every possible way. How did we achieve this just outcome? Certainly your response to the change.org petition cannot be underestimated and also the letters, emails and phone calls to the Minister, local MPs, the PM’s office and the media, and the sharing of social networks that followed on from the petition all helped too. This effort was supported by the trade union United Voice, NSU Disabilities, their employers and work colleagues, the local Bhutanese community, sections of the local & national print and electronic media, the Deaf community and other peak organisations working in the areas of multicultural communities, hearing loss and with disabilities. No matter the result, Kinley and his family were always going to be eternally grateful for the support that they have been given. That they have a successful outcome from all this effort on their behalf, multiplies their gratitude. Finally, we must thank David Coleman MP, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, for seriously considering the evidence presented to him and having the fortitude to make what is the correct but nonetheless difficult decision given the current political situation.
