We cannot ignore the voices of families affected by the inequity of bus access in our area. They have told us that the impact of this issue goes beyond just a minor inconvenience; it affects their sense of safety, their finances, and the lives of the people around them.
Please read one parent's story of how this has impacted their family's life.
"Not having access to busing makes our lives very complicated. We are fortunate because we have so much family to help, but I know that isn't the case for everyone. Because my sister relies on me for childcare, I can't drive our daughter to school every day because otherwise, I have too many kids to fit in my vehicle. To get around this, my sister drops her kids off with me three days a week, takes my daughter to school, grandpa or grandma pick her up from school, and my sister gets her when she finishes work at 5:30. This means that my daughter, niece and nephew don't get home until well after 6:00 most nights. The other two days, I make the trip to town and spend the entire day waiting for school to finish, as driving both ways would cost a fortune. There have been six fatalities on the route that I take to town in the last six months, and every time we drive, I think about the empty bus that passes by my house daily and how much safer we would all be if our kids could be on the bus. It has to stop."
The #1 concern we have heard in our survey of parents has been safety, followed by financial pressure. Please help our families access public school buses by signing our petition.
