Hello everyone, it's been a while!
We've been hard at work talking to parents and determining how many students need access to school buses and on which routes. We've also been finishing up our research on the issue and are finally very close to being ready to bring our case before School District No. 5.
Did you know that we estimate the additional emissions produced by families transporting their children to and from independent schools to be the equivalent of approximately 64,521 lbs of coal burned or the energy consumed by about 7 homes yearly?
These extra vehicles on the road also add unnecessary traffic. SD5 has noted congestion problems in school zones specifically, requesting multiple infrastructure changes from the City of Cranbrook around schools to reduce the risk to children.
Allowing independent school children on public school buses eliminates excess mileage travelled by parents and excess congestion on Cranbrook streets and highways.
This is not just an issue for independent school kids. This is a safety issue, an environmental issue, a justice issue, a social issue that somehow touches everyone in our area.
Please share our petition. Let's keep the momentum going and make sure that SD5 hears us!
