Let Governor Sherrill Into NJ's ICE Detention Facility Delaney Hall Immediately
The Issue
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has been trying to get inside Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention facility in Newark, for days. This past weekend, she was officially denied entry.
Inside that facility, detainees are reportedly on a hunger and work strike to protest their living conditions. Advocates and legal observers have raised serious concerns about access to food, medical care, and basic hygiene. For days, protesters have gathered outside Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey — and they're not leaving. They've blocked vans, faced pepper spray, and stood their ground in front of armed ICE agents to draw attention to what's happening inside.
The Department of Homeland Security says conditions are adequate — but if that's true, they should have nothing to hide.
An elected governor has both the right and the responsibility to check on what is happening inside a detention facility in her own state. Blocking her from doing so isn't just an overstep — it's a refusal to be held accountable by the people of New Jersey.
We're calling on the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to grant Governor Sherrill immediate access to Delaney Hall so she can see the conditions firsthand and report back to the public she serves.
Transparency isn't a partisan issue. It's the bare minimum.
