Let Corfman kids play together at lunch

Let Corfman kids play together at lunch
The Issue
My daughter Siena, a fourth grader at Corfman School, came home one day frustrated because she wasn’t allowed to sit with her best friend at lunch. Why? Because they belong to different classes. As a father, that hit me hard. Lunchtime is the one part of the school day where kids should just get to be kids. This rule takes that away for no good reason. I’m not asking for chaos — I’m asking for common sense. Let the kids eat together.
At Corfman School, children in 4th through 8th grade are currently segregated by class during lunch, preventing them from eating with friends who might be in different classes or grades. This rigid rule misses the essential purpose of the lunch break: to give children a break from structured learning, allowing them to socialize, unwind, and build friendships.
Multiple studies have shown the positive impacts of unstructured social time on a child’s development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, lunchtime plays a crucial role in the physical, social, and cognitive growth of children. It’s a time not just for eating but for developing crucial life skills, such as teamwork, conflict resolution, and creativity.
At a time when mental health is at the forefront, denying children this basic social interaction seems counterproductive. We should be encouraging connections, not putting up barriers. The emotional and psychological benefits far outweigh any logistical concerns.
Our proposal is simple: allow Corfman students in 4th through 8th grade to enjoy lunch with any fellow students, regardless of their class. Teachers and staff can supervise while still maintaining safety and order. This revised approach will foster a more inclusive and supportive school community.
We understand the importance of organization and safety, but believe it can be managed without restricting who students can spend their free time with. Schools across the country have adopted inclusive lunch policies without issue. It’s time Corfman School and McCabe School District do the same.
Please sign this petition to urge Corfman School to revise its lunch policy and let all children eat together, regardless of class. Let’s ensure that every child at Corfman looks forward to lunchtime as a time of joy, friendship, and freedom. Let’s bring common sense back to lunch.
